Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has reiterated her intent to return to her homeland by December 2026. Despite facing a controversial death sentence in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina is undeterred and claims the charges against her are politically motivated.

In a recent conversation, she expressed her willingness to face any legal repercussions, including potential imprisonment, as part of her continued political effort to support her country and its people. “The core question isn’t if I will return, but how I will do so to protect the interests of Bangladesh,” she remarked, underscoring her intent to abide by legal frameworks during her return.

Political Implications and the Awami League

Sheikh Hasina is determined to reactivate the Awami League, asserting that the party has played an essential role in Bangladesh’s journey towards independence and democracy. With the Awami League currently marginalized in the nation’s politics, Hasina aims to reestablish its political influence and maintain the democratic ideals spelled out by her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

She has criticized the current government, which assumed power following her departure, for being unconstitutional and motivated by revenge, describing the legal process and verdict against her as unfair.

Addressing Extremism and Regional Security

In addition to her political plans, Sheikh Hasina highlighted the importance of addressing extremism in Bangladesh, stressing the need for enhanced intelligence, law enforcement, and community engagement. She emphasized that defeating extremism is imperative not only for Bangladesh but for the entire South Asian region, which faces similar threats.

Hasina posited that effective regional cooperation is necessary to address these transnational security threats, proposing that economic integration could fortify security across South Asia.
