Yemeni Refugees Flee to Safety Amid Escalating Conflict
A significant influx of approximately 1,400 Yemeni nationals sought refuge in Djibouti within a span of just one day, according to Djibouti’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Ilyas Moussa Dawaleh. This exodus reflects the growing turmoil as Houthi fighters consolidate their hold on Yemen.
This urgent flight to Obock, a coastal city in Djibouti, marks a refuge for many escaping the strife in Yemen. The location serves as a critical entry point for those fleeing the desperation and violence of the Yemeni conflict. Moreover, it is also a frequent transit route for migrants from the Horn of Africa who endeavor to journey to the Gulf states.
Strain on Resources and Aid Services
Djibouti, which already supports a considerable number of refugees and asylum seekers, is now witnessing an even greater demand for humanitarian assistance. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has mobilized efforts to cater to vulnerable groups, particularly women and children arriving in increasing numbers. Safiya Ibrahim of the IOM highlighted the urgent need for continued aid, noting the foreseeable rise in arrivals.
In light of the ongoing conflicts, safety and access to humanitarian aid remain pivotal. Amy Pope, Director General of the IOM, has called for unimpeded access to affected populations amidst this humanitarian crisis. The organization also reports that about 46,000 individuals in Yemen have been displaced recently due to intensified military operations.

The relentless expansion of the Houthi fighters has exacerbated the displacement crisis. Their recent capture of the essential port city of Mocha and subsequent control over surrounding coastal regions forced many from their homes, emptying entire communities in the process.
