Johnny Marr’s Guitar Legacy: A Charity Auction
Acclaimed guitarist Johnny Marr, best known for his work with The Smiths, has decided to let go of a significant portion of his guitar collection. Nearly 100 guitars, each with its storied past, are set to go under the hammer in a charity auction at Christie’s in London on September 17. These instruments, many of which played pivotal roles in the soundtrack of the 1980s indie music scene, will find new homes while supporting worthy causes.
Noel Gallagher of Oasis recently commented on Marr’s dynamic approach to his guitars, recalling a time when Marr’s instruments played unintended starring roles. Gallagher shared memories from the early days of Oasis when Marr sent over an iconic black 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo. It appeared on the cover of Oasis’ debut single “Supersonic,” symbolizing the intersection of musical generations. Gallagher humorously remarked on his amazement that such a significant piece of musical history was casually in their studio.
Marr’s reason for the sale resonates with any artist wary of turning their creative space into a static collection. He expressed a desire for his musical tools to continue inspiring, rather than becoming mere exhibits. The auction not only includes the Rickenbacker but also instruments like the Cherry Red Gibson ES-355, a gift from music mogul Seymour Stein, which Marr used to create the iconic “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now.”
The collection features other notable guitars, such as a green burst Telecaster from 1984 and a Martin D-28 from 1971, which contributed to classic Smiths tracks. The offering also includes a Fender Johnny Marr Signature Jaguar, which Marr helped design and played in recent performances. Proceeds from 31 of the auctioned lots will benefit The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and The National Autistic Society, reinforcing Marr’s commitment to giving back.
The sale also offers music aficionados the chance to own a piece of history, complete with amplifiers, gold records, posters, and even a collection of harmonicas, with estimated prices ranging up to £150,000. As Marr once again intertwines his musical journey with philanthropy, this auction represents more than just a sale; it exemplifies the enduring legacy of his artistry and generosity.
