Jason Momoa’s Water Brand Helps Replace 6 Million Plastic Bottles

Jason Momoa’s Eco-Initiative Tackles Plastic Pollution

Jason Momoa, the renowned actor, has been championing the fight against plastic pollution through his water brand, Mananalu. Established in 2019, the brand originally packaged its water in environmentally friendly aluminium bottles and initiated a “buy one, remove one” scheme. This strategy funded efforts to extract plastic waste from oceans around the world, successfully eliminating over six million plastic bottles to date.

Innovative Refill Systems Revolutionize Hotel Water Service

In a significant operational shift, Mananalu has partnered with Boomerang Water to introduce on-site bottling systems. These machines, compact yet efficient, are designed to sanitize, refill, and seal hundreds of reusable containers per hour. By connecting to local water supplies and purifying the water directly at hotels, they eliminate the need for pre-packaged water delivery altogether. Guests at participating hotels receive water in sustainably designed bottles, which can be returned and reused, drastically lowering single-use plastic consumption.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

This new approach not only reduces reliance on disposable plastic bottles but also significantly cuts down on carbon emissions. According to the company, carbon emissions have been reduced by as much as 95% with this closed-loop system. The creative collaboration with Boomerang Water, which earned recognition at the 2024 SXSW Product Innovation Awards, exemplifies a scalable solution for environmentally responsible hydration.

Why Hawaii Was Targeted First

Hawaii served as the debut market for these systems due to its unique logistical challenges. Historically dependent on mainland shipping for drinking water, the islands have dealt with extensive transportation emissions and waste management issues. On-site bottling solutions promise to alleviate these problems, offering a more sustainable supply option that reduces shipping needs. Initial implementations began on Oahu, with cooperation from several hospitality businesses.

A Vision Rooted in Heritage and Conscious Living

Momoa’s motivation stems partially from his heritage and personal commitment to environmental stewardship. The name “Mananalu” reflects the Hawaiian ethos of mālama honua, meaning to care for the world. His vision extends beyond mere product delivery, seeking to influence broader industry practices and encourage more sustainable consumption habits globally.
