Heroic Efforts Against Borneo’s Catastrophic Wildfires

In the heart of Borneo, volunteer firefighters like Fahrin Ramadhianto are on the front lines. For over a month, they have battled relentless wildfires, enduring toxic conditions as they work tirelessly to protect both humanity and nature.

The environmental crisis arises from a fusion of extensive drought attributed to the exacerbating ‘Super El Niño’ and raging wildfires across Indonesian Borneo. These fires have now charred approximately 200,000 hectares of land, bringing an alarming smoke haze that knows no borders, affecting regions as far as Malaysia and Singapore.

The Hazard of Peatland Fires

In these tropical peatlands, the fires pose a distinct threat: an invisible yet destructive force known as the ‘carbon bomb’. This occurs when ancient woodlands, renowned for storing massive amounts of carbon, ignite and release vast quantities of greenhouse gases. Dr Nisa Novita from YKAN highlights the potential for disaster when these carbon-rich areas start burning, swiftly increasing atmospheric carbon levels.

With peat deposits measured up to 20 meters deep, the consequences are staggering. Each hectare might unleash the carbon equivalent of years of car emissions. The fires’ persistence in these underground regions spreads pollutants that test the limits of environmental resilience.

Public Health Crisis

The ramifications of such fires extend beyond the environment, endangering public health. Southeast Asia’s air quality has dramatically worsened, triggering respiratory illnesses among populations. Reports indicate a marked spike, with over 50,000 health issues emerging in Indonesia alone, predominantly respiratory infections.

The haze has thickened under this pollution, prompting increased hospital visits. Over 12,000 young children have been affected, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention and relief measures.

The Volunteers’ Commitment

Despite the hazardous conditions, local heroes like Dwi Sujatmoko—who along with his team uses basic tools and sheer determination—continue their brave efforts, striving to contain and manage these fires. Many of these volunteers are native to the region, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to safeguarding their home and its unique ecosystems.

The situation underscores the global urgency for tackling climate change and protecting vital habitats. As these brave individuals persist in their efforts, the world must recognize and support their fight against this environmental catastrophe.
