Graeme Souness Explains Barcelona Rejection After Liverpool Exit

Graeme Souness, a celebrated figure in Liverpool’s history, recently shared insights into his career moves post his stint at the club. In 1984, after achieving commendable success with Liverpool, including lifting the European Cup, Souness made a surprising decision to leave the club for Italy, despite having an offer from FC Barcelona.

The Decision to Leave Liverpool

Souness was at the pinnacle of his football career, widely acclaimed as one of the best midfielders during that era. He finished sixth in the Ballon d’Or rankings that same year, a testament to his prowess on the field. Nonetheless, his departure from Liverpool was influenced by personal circumstances involving his family’s financial matters. His then-wife stood to inherit a significant amount of money but needed to reside outside the UK for a certain period. This played a pivotal role in his decision to explore opportunities abroad, specifically in Italy, where football was thriving.

Why Sampdoria Over Barcelona?

Though FC Barcelona presented an enticing proposal, Souness turned it down. The offer was a two-year contract, but his requirements were specific; he wanted a three-year deal. Italy’s Serie A was particularly alluring at the time, attracting top talents globally, and Souness was keen to be part of this vibrant football scene. Additionally, Sampdoria, under the new presidency of Paolo Mantovani, was constructing a team with a blend of young talent and experienced players. Souness felt his experience could significantly contribute to such an ambitious project.

Impact at Rangers

After his time in Italy, Souness returned to the UK in 1986, taking on a dual role at Rangers as both player and manager. His tenure at Rangers was transformative, ushering in a successful period for the club. Despite his managerial success, he acknowledges that his straightforward approach in management might not be suited for the modern football landscape.

Rangers vs Celtic: Gaining the Upper Hand

In recent discussions, Souness has also touched on the current dynamics between Rangers and their rivals, Celtic. Following two successful encounters against Celtic, Souness believes Rangers have shifted the psychological balance in their favor. He asserts that these wins could instill a lasting confidence within the team, provided they maintain consistency in their performances.
