Liam Farrell to Hang Up His Boots at End of Season

Wigan Warriors’ esteemed captain, Liam Farrell, has announced he will retire from professional rugby league following the conclusion of this season. At 36, Farrell’s career spans over a decade of remarkable achievements since his debut with Wigan in 2010.

Farrell, a second-row stalwart, became a central figure for Wigan, participating in 428 matches throughout his career. His leadership and skill led the team to numerous victories, accumulating an impressive tally of six Super League titles, five League Leaders’ Shields, five Challenge Cup wins, and two World Club Challenge triumphs.

Having been appointed as team captain at the beginning of the 2023 season, Farrell played a pivotal role when Wigan clinched an unprecedented quadruple in 2024 under his guidance. Despite his contract extending to next year, a lingering shoulder injury has kept him off the field since June, prompting his decision to retire earlier than planned.

Reflecting on his career, Farrell expressed gratitude for the opportunities and success he enjoyed, stating, “It’s been a whirlwind of a career, more than I could ever have dreamed of doing. Although I’ll be sad not to be playing any more, I’m also very grateful for the career I have had and I can now look forward to the next part of my life.”

Beyond his club achievements, Farrell has also made significant contributions to the England national team, earning 12 caps over the years. His retirement marks the end of an era for Wigan Warriors, but Farrell leaves a legacy of leadership and excellence both on and off the pitch.

As Wigan gears up for future challenges without him, Farrell’s impact and experience will undoubtedly be missed by fans and teammates alike.
