Teen’s Hand Severed During French School Protests
A tragic incident during ongoing student protests in France left a 15-year-old student with his hand blown off in Lent, a town in the northeastern region of France. This event has drawn significant attention as it highlights rising tensions between protesting students and law enforcement.
The incident took place near the Auguste Béhal high school as approximately 500 educational institutions experienced disruptions or closures nationwide. Protests have intensified, with students expressing dissatisfaction over failing infrastructure and insufficient staff in schools, often leading to heightened confrontations with police forces.
Details surrounding the injury remain unclear, though initial reports from the French media suggest the teenager may have picked up an active police stun grenade. Authorities have yet to confirm these claims, but an investigation has been commissioned by the General Inspection of the National Police (IGPN) to uncover the sequence of events surrounding the incident.
François-Xavier Lauch, the prefect of Pas-de-Calais, confirmed the incident happened Monday morning. Lauch reported that the student’s life is not in jeopardy and that he received immediate medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
The protest was notably larger than earlier gatherings, with students reportedly hurling stones, fireworks, and other objects at local law enforcement officers present at the scene. Lauch indicated that riot police were authorized to intervene amidst the unrest.
In response to escalating safety concerns, the Auguste Béhal high school opted for a shift to remote learning. A support unit has also been established for students and staff, ensuring emotional and psychological assistance during these challenging times.
As France grapples with these critical school disturbances, the government faces mounting pressure to address student grievances and restore order while ensuring the safety and well-being of both students and educators moving forward.
