Van Gerwen’s Opening Round Exit Shocks Darts World

In a surprising turn of events at the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam, Michael van Gerwen, the defending champion and top seed, suffered a narrow defeat against Daryl Gurney. The Northern Irishman, who entered the tournament as a late substitute, managed to clinch victory in a tense 6-5 match.

Dramatic Comeback

Gurney made an impressive start by taking the first three legs, leaving Van Gerwen trailing early in the match. Despite the shaky beginning, Van Gerwen bounced back energetically, winning five straight legs to bring him within reach of victory. However, Gurney kept his composure, seizing the ninth leg to keep the pressure on.

The climax came when Van Gerwen squandered six match darts, allowing Gurney to equalize at 5-5, and eventually seal the win in a gripping final leg. This unexpected result sends Gurney into the last 16, where he is set to face Ross Smith from England, who advanced following a win over Kevin Doets.

Karel Sedlacek marked his first-ever tournament appearance with a 6-4 victory against New Zealand’s Ben Robb, advancing him to a match with Gian van Veen.
