Former U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled his support for a proposal to halt diesel exports as a strategy to mitigate the spiraling costs of energy. Speaking to the media, Trump expressed his view that maintaining diesel stocks domestically could alleviate the financial pressure on American consumers.

Diesel prices in key markets like Europe and the United States have experienced significant hikes, with geopolitical conflicts in Iran and Ukraine contributing to reduced output from major suppliers including Russia and Saudi Arabia. Currently, U.S. diesel prices have hit historically high levels, averaging over $6.50 per gallon, marking a 75% increase compared to the previous year.

In discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump urged caution regarding Ukrainian actions targeting Russian oil refineries, highlighting potential repercussions for global energy prices. Moreover, some Republican figures have echoed Trump’s stance, calling on the national administration to consider the ban as a method to mitigate inflationary pressures on essential commodities.

While Trump perceives export restrictions as a viable solution, industry representatives such as the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers warn of potential counterproductive outcomes.
