Serbian Tennis Player Receives 24-Year Ban for Match-Fixing

Serbian Tennis Player Faces Lengthy Ban

In a striking move against corruption in sports, Serbian tennis player Stefan Milicevic has been handed a 24-year suspension following accusations of match-fixing. This sanction, among the longest issued, will keep Milicevic away from the sport until October 2050, marking a dramatic fall for the player who once ranked 1,338th globally.

Allegations and Charges

The International Tennis Integrity Authority (ITIA) found Milicevic guilty of manipulating results in six matches, five of which he participated in. These manipulations spanned several years, from 2013 to 2023, with attempts to fix additional matches between 2022 and 2024. The ITIA contends that Milicevic attempted to recruit other professionals to join a match-fixing network, further exacerbating the severity of his punishment.

Non-Cooperation with Investigators

Milicevic’s reluctance to cooperate with investigators contributed substantially to the harshness of his penalty. Despite seven outreach attempts by the ITIA, Milicevic remained unresponsive, showcasing a lack of cooperation which factored heavily into the ruling. As part of his punishment, Milicevic must also pay a fine of £53,000, and he is barred from participating in any tennis events affiliated with the sport’s major governing bodies, including the ATP and WTA.

Comparison with Other Sanctions

The case brings to mind previous similar penalties, such as the one involving French player Quentin Folliot, who was banned for 20 years in 2022 for a similar crime. Folliot was implicated in operating within a wider syndicate aimed at fixing matches for profit. These cases underscore the ongoing challenges faced by tennis authorities in upholding the sport’s integrity worldwide.

Maintaining Integrity in Sports

Instances like Milicevic’s are a reminder of the significant efforts required to safeguard sports from corruption. The ITIA continues to enforce rigorous measures to combat match-fixing, ensuring fair play and maintaining public confidence in tennis. With stern rulings and a continual watch on the tournaments, sporting bodies strive to prevent the recurrence of such damaging violations.
