Search Continues for Missing After Nairobi Building Collapse

Ongoing Search and Rescue in Nairobi After Building Collapse

Rescue teams in Nairobi are tirelessly working to locate seven individuals believed to be trapped beneath the debris of a recently collapsed multi-storey building. This tragic incident highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding construction standards in Kenya’s capital.

The unfortunate event was captured on video, showing the building’s lower floors crumbling before the entire structure fell in. Dust engulfed the surrounding streets, starkly illustrating the collapse’s magnitude. At the time of the incident, numerous construction workers were present, mostly on the upper floors, but they managed to escape serious injury, as per sources. Only one sustained non-critical injuries, while others in shops on the ground floor remain unaccounted for.

Concerns Over Building Standards

This latest collapse raises fresh questions about Nairobi’s building safety regulations. The block, still under construction, had scaffolding around it and 11 operational shops at its base. Investigators are now evaluating why the structure failed and whether it breached any planning regulations.

Interior ministry official Kipchumba Murkomen stated that almost all construction workers in the building managed to evacuate safely. However, the missing individuals were thought to be in the ground-level stores.

Authorities Demand Accountability

In response to the incident, Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson criticized the building owners for lacking the necessary occupancy permits. He calls for increased authority for local officials to enforce construction laws against those who neglect to follow approved plans.

These incidents are alarmingly frequent within Nairobi, with faulty construction practice and regulatory oversight failure cited as principal reasons. Kenya’s National Construction Authority has acknowledged the development team on the project but has yet to confirm if an inspection was performed prior to the calamity.

Rescue operations, hindered by the risk that heavy machinery could endanger trapped individuals by cutting off their air supply, continue with utmost caution. Responders are forced to forgo using diggers to ensure the safety of potential survivors.
