Jersey Meal Delivery Service Faces Volunteer Shortage Amid Fuel Costs

In Jersey, the Meals on Wheels service is encountering recruitment challenges for volunteer drivers, primarily due to the increasing cost of fuel. These challenges were highlighted by Maureen Bougeard, who explained the difficulties in attracting new drivers to the service, which relies entirely on volunteer support.

The service, which has been a lifeline for many, delivers meals four times a week to about 100 residents unable to prepare meals themselves. The rising fuel prices have become a formidable barrier, deterring many potential volunteers.

“Volunteers often express concerns about fuel costs,” Bougeard said. “When potential volunteers learn they need to cover their own fuel expenses, many become unresponsive.” Despite this, the organization remains active, supported by over 200 volunteers, mainly retirees.

Efforts to Maintain Service and Seek Volunteers

The Meals on Wheels team has adopted several approaches to maintain their delivery service, supported by a generous £38,000 grant from the Jersey Community Foundation. This grant aids in shouldering some expenses and ensuring continued operations. Nonetheless, Bougeard notes that the burden of fuel costs remains a concern for many current and prospective volunteers.

Many volunteers make multiple trips across the island, demonstrating their dedication despite financial constraints. “Not all retirees face financial hardships, but some do, yet they still manage to dedicate their time, which is truly remarkable,” Bougeard added.

Currently, individuals receiving meals pay a nominal charge of £5. The planning for future service agreements with the government of Jersey aims to ensure the longevity of this invaluable service. There are discussions underway to secure arrangements with the health and community services department to manage meal preparation and delivery efficiently.

The community’s dependence on this essential service highlights the urgency of overcoming financial issues related to fuel costs. Despite the difficulties, the team at Meals on Wheels remains hopeful that continued community support and potential new volunteers will allow the service to thrive.
