Oliver Lines Upsets Zhao Xintong in English Open Snooker

In a remarkable display at the English Open, snooker player Oliver Lines secured a 4-2 victory over reigning world champion Zhao Xintong. This unexpected turn of events in the first round saw Lines, who holds the 53rd world ranking, outperform one of the sport’s elite players.

The match, held in Brentwood, was a gripping contest from the start. Zhao, the Chinese sensation crowned world champion in 2025, made an impressive start with two century breaks. This effort put the match level at 2-2 after the initial four frames, suggesting a tight competition.

However, Lines, at 31-years-old, demonstrated exceptional skill and composure under pressure. He crafted breaks of 77 and 84 in subsequent frames, closing out the match and setting up a challenging confrontation with Yuan Sijun in the event’s last 32.

Reflecting on his performance, Lines acknowledged, “You know you have to raise your game.” He admitted that while it’s crucial not to let the pressure overwhelm, playing against top-tier opponents requires nothing less than the best effort.

In other matches, the tournament witnessed a few more surprises. Neil Robertson, ranked fourth globally, succumbed to a narrow 4-3 defeat by another Chinese player, Luo Zetao. Meanwhile, two-time world champion Kyren Wilson emerged victorious over Poland’s Mateusz Baranowski with a convincing 4-1 result. Additionally, China’s Ding Junhui, a significant figure with three UK Championship titles, narrowly overcame Michael Holt in a 4-3 encounter.
