Malawi Opposition Seeks Clarity on President’s Extended Visit Abroad

Malawi Opposition Demands Transparency Over President’s Absence

Amidst mounting national issues, Malawi’s political scene is experiencing tension as opposition parties seek clarity over President Peter Mutharika’s extended visit to South Africa. The president departed on a private visit earlier this month, and his continued absence has raised questions about leadership and governance as the country deals with significant economic and resource challenges.

Mutharika, aged 86, has made numerous trips abroad this year, with scant details disclosed about these excursions. This lack of information has sparked calls from the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for an explanation. They argue that the country is at a point where decisive leadership is necessary to address pressing issues such as fuel shortages, frequent blackouts, and economic instability.

The opposition’s campaign director, Moses Kunkuyu, emphasized that their concern lies not with the president’s right to travel for personal reasons, but rather with the apparent lack of communication regarding the country’s governance in his absence. Kunkuyu prompted the Vice-President Jane Ansah to reassure the nation about management and responses to the ongoing crises.

Despite the uproar, Information Minister Shadric Namalomba has stated that the president remains in control, regardless of his physical location. He dismissed the opposition’s concerns as politically motivated and reminded the public of the issues inherited from the previous administration.

During this period of speculation and scrutiny, President Mutharika entrusted the country’s delegation to the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) summit in Zimbabwe to the trade minister. Concurrently, officials have quashed rumors circulating on social media suggesting the president’s travel to India for medical treatment, reaffirming his presence in South Africa.

Mutharika, who returned to power last October, has previously deflected questions about his health as baseless. However, the ongoing national issues, including a severe shortage in foreign currency affecting fuel imports and healthcare supply chain disruptions, continue to heighten public dissatisfaction and curiosity about Mutharika’s leadership style during these challenging times.
