French President Emmanuel Macron has taken a firm stance against the recent surge in violence that has erupted during protests over the cost of living in France. Emphasizing that no amount of frustration can justify the lawlessness seen across the nation, Macron addressed the public to express both anger and shame at the destruction and chaos unleashed on French streets.
Government’s Stance on Rioters
Macron made it clear that his administration would not tolerate the looting and destruction witnessed during these demonstrations. While he acknowledged the legitimacy of some protestors’ demands, he stressed that violent actions, which have caused extensive damage to public and private properties, are unacceptable and would be met with strict government measures. In line with this, Macron assured that those responsible for rioting would face repercussions under the law.
Coordinated Efforts for Protection
To mitigate further damage and unrest, Macron mentioned plans for coordinated action with local mayors to safeguard public infrastructure and businesses. He acknowledged the unbearable scenes of devastation left in the wake of the protests and pledged governmental support to affected businesses, aiming to rebuild and restore operations swiftly.
Calls for Transparency and Reform
In the wake of criticism over the security response, Macron committed to full transparency regarding the actions taken by law enforcement during these challenging times. He tasked Interior Minister Laurent Nunez with evaluating and refining strategies, particularly in intelligence and preventive measures, to better handle future situations.
The aftermath of the protests has seen the arrest of nearly 2,400 individuals, with almost a thousand police and gendarmes injured, according to the interior ministry. As the nation grapples with these turbulent times, Macron’s administration faces the pressing task of finding solutions that address economic grievances while ensuring public safety and order.
