US Lawmakers Demand Federal Investigation of Illinois Temple Plot
In response to a thwarted plan to attack a Hindu temple in Illinois, a group of US lawmakers is calling for an in-depth investigation by the FBI. They have requested the event be classified as a federal hate crime, highlighting a growing trend of threats against South Asian communities.
The Congressional Caucus on India, represented by co-chairs Rich McCormick and Ro Khanna, has voiced concerns over the failed attempt in Aurora. They have sent a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel urging a comprehensive investigation to determine if others were involved in or facilitated the plot, either online or in-person. This demand comes amid reports of increasing hostility towards immigrant communities in the United States.
The request for an inquiry follows findings from the FBI and the Centre for the Study of Organised Hate, which indicate a rise in crimes against Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist communities. These unsettling trends underscore the need for greater protective measures and timely information sharing with local law enforcement and affected communities.
Lawmakers are calling for federal agencies to provide protective resources to temples, gurdwaras, and other religious institutions at risk. Furthermore, they have asked for regular updates on security threats against Hindu and Indian Americans to ensure their safety and freedom to practice their religion without fear.
Recent surveys, such as one conducted by the Carnegie Endowment in 2026, reveal that discrimination and hateful rhetoric towards Indian Americans have surged, with a significant portion of the community reporting experiences of slurs and racist encounters.
Emphasizing the seriousness of the situation, McCormick and Khanna urge the FBI and Justice Department to consider the growing hatred and its potential consequences. They stress the necessity to address these issues with due seriousness to safeguard the future of minority communities in the US.
This incident is a sobering reminder of the persistent threat of hate crimes, reiterating the need for vigilance and swift action from authorities.
