Gaza’s Concern as Israel Heads to Polls
The atmosphere in Gaza is one of unease and anticipation as Israel prepares for its national elections this month. Despite lacking voting rights, Palestinians in Gaza are anxiously observing the campaigns, aware that the outcomes could directly affect their future.
Gaza’s residents have endured years of turmoil and hardship, with over 70,000 lives lost since the onset of the catastrophic conflict with Israel in 2023. For those like Maryam al-Dabala, a 30-year-old who has experienced displacement numerous times, the election outcome could either signal continuity or change in policies that have made life difficult.
The elections, scheduled for October 27, will be pivotal in determining the direction of Israel’s stance on Gaza. Current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right policies continue to instill fear among Gazans of ongoing forced displacement and deteriorating conditions. Maryam al-Dabala, among many others, dreads the prospect of a Netanyahu-led administration extending its rule.
Potential Political Impact
Among the candidates, Gadi Eisenkot, leading the Yashar party, does not inspire much optimism for change among Palestinians. Having served in Netanyahu’s previous administration during the conflict’s initial months, Eisenkot’s views on West Bank settlements and the two-state solution raise concerns. While some hope for a policy shift, many foresee limited changes even if the political landscape shifts slightly.
Osama al-Arbaei, a 65-year-old who lost nine family members in a bombing, voices his skepticism. Residing in temporary conditions after relentless displacement, he views the elections as unlikely to change the harsh realities of life in Gaza, such as high food prices and scarce job opportunities.
Persistent Hardships
The ceasefire initiated on October 10 has done little to halt violence in the region, with significant casualty figures reported since. Displacement remains extensive, with families continually moving among makeshift camps. For many, the urgent issues of shortages in medicines, food, and shelter dominate their daily lives.
As Gaza watches from the margins, the stakes of the Israeli election resonate profoundly within its borders, painting a picture of uncertainty and apprehension. The people hope for policies that acknowledge their struggles and a future where relief is possible, but many remain pessimistic in light of past experiences.
