G7 Calls for Iran to Halt Support for Houthis in Yemen
In a recent declaration, the foreign ministers of the G7 nations have firmly urged Iran to terminate its military backing of the Houthi rebels in Yemen. This plea comes ahead of the annual United Nations General Assembly gathering in New York, where high-ranking Iranian officials are slated to present.
The G7’s statement not only criticizes Iran’s support but also denounces the recent Houthi offensives on Saudi Arabia as severely detrimental to both regional and global energy security. These attacks have exacerbated a long-standing conflict, renewing fears of broader destabilization in the area.
Escalation of Hostilities and Humanitarian Impact
As the situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate, thousands of residents have been forced to flee following the Houthis’ recent territorial acquisitions along the crucial Red Sea shoreline, which includes the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. This narrow passageway is essential for world trade, and its control is pivotal in the conflict.
Consequently, the UN has reported that the recent clashes have displaced over 120,000 Yemenis, raising alarms over a potential escalation in the humanitarian crisis.
