Rantzen first made her mark in the world of media as a young professional at BBC radio and quickly climbed the ranks to become a significant presence on television. Her most famous role was as the presenter and producer of the TV show ‘That’s Life!’ from 1973 to 1994. This program combined incisive consumer investigations with quirky, light-hearted segments, attracting up to 20 million viewers at its peak. It was through this platform that she championed various consumer rights and social causes.

Charitable Legacy

Adding to her broadcasting achievements, Rantzen was a trailblazer in the charity sector. In 1986, she founded Childline, a helpline designed to support vulnerable children and young people in distress. Her commitment to social causes didn’t stop there; in 2013, she established Silver Line, a helpline aimed at reducing loneliness among the elderly. These initiatives reflect her lifelong dedication to improving the lives of others.

Advocacy and Personal Challenges

Later in her career, Esther Rantzen became an outspoken advocate for the legalisation of assisted dying. After being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in January 2023, she publically shared her journey, bringing attention to the debate surrounding end-of-life choices. Although she initially planned to travel to Dignitas in Switzerland, she later deemed herself too frail for the journey, reiterating her call for legislative change in the UK.

Dame Esther was married to documentary filmmaker Desmond Wilcox until his death in 2000. They were parents to three children, and her family has celebrated her as a “wonderful mother” and “cherished grandmother.” For her extensive contributions to society, she was appointed a Dame in 2015, recognizing her impact on the lives of both the young and old.
