Birzeit University Memorial Demolition Sparks Outcry
Israeli forces destroy Birzeit University’s memorial, sparking criticism for erasing Palestinian memory and heritage.
In an early morning operation, Israeli military forces entered the grounds of Birzeit University, near Ramallah, demolishing a significant memorial that commemorated students who had died due to Israeli military actions. The destruction of this stone pillar, known as the Martyrs’ Monument, has sparked renewed grief and anger among Palestinians.
Uncovering the Impact
The heart of this emotional upheaval rests with individuals like Rania Washaha, whose brother, Fadi, was among those commemorated on the monument. Fadi was tragically killed in 2021 by an Israeli soldier, an incident that has left a lasting scar on his family. His name was one of 38 etched into the stone, serving as a memory of those lost.
Military Incursions and Responses
This recent military action is part of an ongoing series of raids by Israeli forces on the university campus. Since the beginning of the year, the site has faced multiple incursions, which the university administration decries as violations against educational sanctity and international norms. The university released a statement condemning the bulldozing of the memorial, emphasizing that such acts cannot erase the memories of their fallen and will not deter their educational mission.
A Community’s Defiance
In response to the destruction, students and faculty gathered to protest at the site, expressing their resolve to honor the memorialized names. Despite the installation of a fig sapling – a literal replacement left behind by the soldiers – the university community vowed to continue commemorating those lost. This defiant spirit was further echoed by Sami Adel, a student fearing repercussions, who noted the symbolic importance of the memorial.
Historical Context and Ongoing Struggle
The memorial, constructed between 1994 and 1996, traces the deadly toll borne by students and alumni since 1984. It underscores a continuing effort by Palestinians to preserve their collective memory amidst ongoing political and military tensions. The most recent name added was that of Omar al-Naasan, who was fatally shot while resisting settler encroachments.
Birzeit University’s administration and student body view these actions as part of a broader attempt by Israeli authorities to stifle Palestinian memory and political expression. The struggle to preserve historical memory remains at the forefront of the community’s resistance efforts, as students and activists face increasing pressure.
