Airbnb Introduces New Global Rules to Ease Guest Chore Burden

Airbnb Revamps Guest Chore Policies with New Guidelines

Starting 20 November, Airbnb guests across the globe will experience a more relaxed stay, as the company has announced new global rules limiting the household tasks guests are required to perform. These changes have been driven by long-standing complaints from users about having to handle odious chores like stripping beds or washing dishes despite paying hefty cleaning fees.

Under the updated guidelines, hosts can no longer impose tasks considered arduous or time-consuming. This means Airbnb patrons will not be responsible for disposing of rubbish offsite or dealing with bed linens, tasks traditionally handled by cleaning services.

To enhance transparency, Airbnb is mandating that hosts clearly display their house rules at the time of booking. These rules include specifics such as check-in and check-out times, maximum guest numbers, smoking limitations, and policies regarding pets. While chores involving significant efforts are restricted, hosts can still make reasonable requests based on local conditions, such as asking guests to use water sparingly in areas experiencing drought.

The move comes as part of a broader attempt to streamline the guest experience, reducing confusion and ensuring honest communication regarding the expectations upon booking a property. An Airbnb spokesperson emphasized that these changes aim to make house rules easier to find and follow, with an overarching goal of avoiding surprise demands on visitors.

Although guests will now find a lighter load of chores, hosts will still have the ability to make minor requests, like asking guests to place their used dishes in the sink. By alleviating the chore burden, Airbnb hopes to enhance guest satisfaction and set clear expectations for both hosts and visitors moving forward.
