Trump and Burnham Strengthen UK-US Relations Amid Chagos Controversy
During a high-profile meeting at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and US President Donald Trump discussed the dynamics of UK-US relations. Both leaders expressed optimism about future collaborations, with Trump lauding Burnham as someone he can do business with.

However, the US President wasn’t without criticisms. He openly opposed the UK’s agreement concerning the Chagos Islands, describing the deal as “terrible”. The agreement involves transferring sovereignty of the archipelago to Mauritius while leasing back the strategically crucial military base on Diego Garcia, essential for US operations, especially regarding Iran.
The proposed deal would require the UK to pay Mauritius approximately £101 million annually to lease the base, although the plan was paused indefinitely after Trump withdrew support earlier this year. Trump emphasized the importance of the military base’s continued operation, hinting at potential security implications if the deal proceeds.
In light of Trump’s comments, Prime Minister Burnham indicated a willingness to revisit the deal. The UK is seeking a balanced resolution while ensuring long-term operational security at the base, a sentiment echoed in Burnham’s discussions with Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam before heading to New York.
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK and a staunch critic of the agreement, publicly celebrated the deal’s halt, echoing Trump’s sentiment by declaring it “dead”.
