England’s Unbeaten Run Halted by Canada’s Resilient Performance
England’s formidable 41-match unbeaten streak came to a dramatic close as Canada secured a 24-21 victory in front of a record-breaking crowd in Toronto. This historic result marks the first time England has been defeated by Canada since their 2016 encounter, and the Red Roses’ first away game loss on Canadian soil, where they previously held an 11-match winning record.
Canada’s journey to victory was ignited by Savannah Bauder, who capitalized on a critical moment when England’s Zoe Harrison was sidelined with a yellow card, putting the hosts in the lead in the 15th minute. However, England quickly responded, turning the tide before halftime with tries from Maddie Feaunati and Harrison, giving them a nine-point advantage by the break.
Despite England’s robust efforts to maintain their lead, a solo try by Alysha Corrigan for Canada narrowed the gap, though Sarah Bern’s quick response seemed to secure England’s position. Yet, intense pressure from Canada’s DaLeaka Menin brought them closer with a converted try, setting the stage for a suspenseful final period.
In an exhilarating turn of events, Canada surged in the final moments with Shoshanah Seumanutafa leading the charge down the left, sealing the game with a try just three minutes from time. This impressive comeback signified the conclusion of England’s unparalleled 41-game run, a streak stretched back to their last noteworthy loss in November 2022 against New Zealand.
The teams will face off again in Ottawa on Friday, 23 October, continuing their rivalry. The Red Roses will then head to New Jersey to compete against the USA as the WXV Global Series progresses, aiming to recover and end their series on a high note.
