Ethiopia Accuses Neighbors Amid Rising Regional Conflict Tensions

Tensions have heightened in northern Ethiopia as the government casts accusations towards neighboring countries, alleging their support of anti-government movements within its borders. As violence intensifies, Ethiopia’s leader has pointed fingers at Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt, claiming they are backing insurgent activities, raising the specter of wider regional conflict.

Ethiopia’s Accusations and Responses

Over the recent weekend, Chief of Army Staff Birhanu Jula openly criticized these nations, labelling them as adversaries to Ethiopia. The army chief specifically highlighted Eritrea’s role as an intermediary, linking armed factions within Ethiopia to these external governments.

The countries named in these allegations have denied any involvement. An Egyptian Foreign Ministry representative emphasized their commitment to non-interventionist policies and international law, stressing respect for national sovereignty. Alongside, an Egyptian military official dismissed the claims, noting that Egypt historically avoids meddling in regional internal affairs.

Regional Dynamics and Counter-Claims

While Sudan rebuffed the Ethiopian accusations as unfounded, it retaliated with its own claims. Sudan’s military charged Ethiopia with destabilizing behavior, alleging support for the Rapid Support Forces—paramilitary units currently engaged in conflict with Sudan’s central military authorities since 2023. In contrast, Ethiopia has rejected these assertions.
