Chief Justice Advocates Shift in Judicial Focus to Include Victims

In a significant move aimed at rebalancing focus within the justice system, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant called for increased attention to victims during the criminal justice process. Speaking at the inauguration of a new Victim Rights Centre at the Bihar State Legal Services Authority, Justice Kant highlighted the traditional emphasis on the accused and offences, raising concerns about how victims are often marginalized after providing their initial statement.

The event, held at the Bihar State Legal Services Authority premises, underscored the necessity for a paradigm shift to incorporate a more victim-centric approach. Justice Kant stressed that the victim’s journey through the legal process, often reduced to a statement until called to testify, needs immediate attention. He pointed out that the time between providing an initial account and the day of testimony is a period where the victim is largely unsupported.

The newly established Victim Rights Centre aims to address these gaps by offering a comprehensive suite of services. These include compensation schemes, legal and medical assistance, counseling services, and provisions for the protection and rehabilitation of victims. This initiative intends to keep victims informed and supported throughout the judicial process, ensuring that their needs are not overshadowed by the procedural focus on the accused.
