Gen Z’s Fitness Revolution: Embracing Strength Training Over Cardio

In recent years, there’s been a significant shift in how young people approach fitness. While older generations might have preferred jogging or cycling, today’s younger crowd is opting for strength training. This change is reshaping how fitness is perceived and practiced among Gen Z.

Antonia Duffin, 34, embodies this shift. Initially motivated to shed pounds and tone her physique, Duffin found herself so engrossed in the fitness lifestyle that she became a personal trainer alongside her main employment. Today, she runs her own women’s gym in Manchester, focusing largely on strength training.

“Clients come with diverse goals,” says Duffin, “from building strength to improving conditions like endometriosis.” The appeal of strength training versus traditional cardio is evident among her clientele, especially the younger ones. Duffin highlights a trend: younger folks are increasingly turning to strength workouts, partly for health benefits like osteoporosis prevention.

The Growing Popularity of Gym Culture

Data from Sport England underlines this trend, showing more young adults frequenting gyms and engaging in workouts that prioritize weights and resistance training over cardio activities. The numbers reflect a steady decline in traditional cardio exercises such as running and swimming, while gym sessions and weightlifting are climbing in popularity.

Dr. Andrew Scott, an expert in exercise science from the University of Portsmouth, comments on this shift. He points out that the variety offered by gyms, particularly resistance training, may deliver faster improvements in body composition compared to aerobic exercises. Moreover, social media plays a notable role, as fitness influencers inspire young individuals by showcasing their strength training journeys.

Case in Point: Will Seward’s Fitness Journey

At just 19, Will Seward started his fitness journey during secondary school. His initial experience involved treadmill runs and use of other cardio machines. Over time, however, he transitioned to strength-centric exercises. Seward’s routine now includes high-intensity weight sessions which have fostered not just physical gains, but also enhanced mental wellbeing. “It’s made a significant difference in my life,” he shares, speaking to the mood-lifting effects and overall health benefits.

Beyond Physical Benefits

Research supports the physical and mental benefits of strength training, suggesting two hours a week can yield similar advantages as regular cardio. These include lowering heart disease risks and bolstering mental health. Furthermore, strength training supports muscle development, boosts confidence, and improves daily life functionality.

As fitness trends evolve, it’s clear that Gen Z is redefining how health and wellness are pursued. With a focus on strength and resilience, this generation is carving out a path that emphasizes comprehensive personal development, far beyond mere physical transformation.
