Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has disclosed gifts worth £8,177 received for her trip to Greece, facilitated by News Corp UK. The visit included a meeting with Rupert Murdoch and other senior executives.
Badenoch, accompanied by her husband Hamish and Alex Burghart, Conservative shadow minister, traveled to Athens in late August. The costs, borne by the Murdoch publishing empire, covered travel, accommodation, and miscellaneous expenses.
Badenoch’s spokesperson emphasized the significance of engaging with key media leaders, stressing the importance of maintaining a dynamic dialogue with major UK media entities such as the BBC. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss media-related issues with Rupert Murdoch and other high-ranking News Corp and News UK figures.
The expenses reported include flights from Rome to Athens, as well as Athens to London, amounting to £4,000. Additional costs consisted of ground transport priced at £1,752.50 and accommodation at £2,425.45.
This trip took place shortly after Badenoch’s diplomatic visit to Italy where she engaged with Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. Her meeting with Murdoch follows another meeting held in 2022, during her tenure as an international trade minister.
Burghart also reported a similar financial disclosure of £4,088.97, for the same meeting activities.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Andy Burnham also participated in registering gifts recently, noting personal hospitality related to the Premier League.
Murmurs regarding influential media support arise from the meeting, historically highlighted by Murdoch’s publications’ fluctuating political support in the UK, most notably shifting alliances between major parties over the years.
