Tragic A61 Collision Leads to Multiple Charges

A significant development has emerged following a tragic road incident that claimed the lives of six individuals, including two young children, on the A61. The horrific crash involved a collision between a family car and a motorcycle on 21 July 2024, leaving families and communities devastated.

The incident involved Shannen Morgan and Shane Roller, along with their daughters, Rubie, aged nine, and Lillie, aged four. They tragically lost their lives when their vehicle collided with a motorcycle carrying Barnsley residents Christopher and Janine Barton, who also perished in the crash.

In a recent legal development, 50-year-old Christopher Cockell is facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving. He is scheduled to appear in front of magistrates in Leeds later this month. These charges follow a detailed investigation into the crash events, noting that the Ford Focus, driven by Mr. Roller, and the BMW motorcycle, driven by Mr. Barton, collided head-on, causing the devastating outcome.

The crash took place between Staincross and Newmillerdam, around mid-afternoon, critically affecting those involved and leaving a community to mourn. An inquest revealed that the collision took place between vehicles traveling on the A61, a road running between Barnsley and Wakefield.

In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated by a close family friend to support the surviving daughter of Mr. Roller and Ms. Morgan, who fortunately was not present during the crash. The fundraiser, which showcases the community’s compassion and support, has successfully raised over £400,000.
