Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, is urging the UK government to enact an immediate 10 pence reduction in fuel duty, a proposal aimed at alleviating the current cost of living pressures. Davey’s call comes as part of a broader strategy to address financial burdens faced by individuals across the nation.
The push for a temporary reduction, lasting until the end of the year, is hoped to provide immediate relief at the petrol pumps, with the potential to lower fuel prices by approximately 12 pence per litre. Davey argues that this policy could self-finance, thanks to increased tax revenues from the energy profits levy and other sources.
This demand comes in the wake of the Conservative government’s decision last year to freeze fuel duty, a measure continued by the current government, albeit with plans for a 3 pence increase that was postponed. Davey suggests this immediate cut would not only support drivers but also stimulate economic activity amid ongoing economic challenges.
Davey’s vision extends beyond fuel, advocating for a broader package that includes reducing the cap on bus fares from £3 to £1 and cutting rail fares by 10%. Additionally, he proposes removing VAT charges from electric vehicle charging points to further incentivize sustainable transport options.
Speaking on the matter, Labour Party chair Bridget Phillipson acknowledged the Liberal Democrats’ proposals while noting Labour’s previous commitments on fuel duty. She mentioned that Chancellor John Healey remains open to all suggestions as he prepares the upcoming budget amidst ballooning government borrowing costs.
