Zack Polanski, engaged in the upcoming byelection battle for Holborn and St Pancras, faced a setback as his request to delay the Green Party’s annual conference was declined. Polanski, who is also the leader of the Green Party, aimed to shift the conference date to better focus on the byelection efforts, yet the executive committee, responsible for major party decisions, opted against the change.
The decision came despite Polanski’s interest in postponing the conference. The rationale behind this involved concerns about resource allocation if the events were closely scheduled, as the conference is set just days before the byelection. Nonetheless, the party’s leadership, including around 25 committee members, voted to proceed with the conference as planned.
With roughly 3,000 attendees anticipated at the Brighton event beginning on October 2, rescheduling posed logistical issues. The possible financial and member relations impact of canceling or altering the conference date at such short notice weighed heavily on the decision-making process. Thus, the Green Party remained committed to running both a robust conference and a focused byelection campaign concurrently.

The Holborn and St Pancras seat, held previously by Labour’s Keir Starmer, represents a formidable challenge for Polanski. Adding to the complexity is an upcoming policy motion at the conference concerning Zionism, marked as controversial within the party ranks. This motion suggests equating Zionism with racism, a stance that threatens to divide party supporters and possibly alienate Jewish constituents. As a Jewish leader, Polanski’s position on the matter remains closely watched, although he has reportedly supported modifications to soften the motion.
