Maty Ryan Left Out of Socceroos Squad for Brazil Friendlies

Socceroos captain Maty Ryan has been surprisingly omitted from Australia’s squad for upcoming friendly matches against Brazil, despite displaying excellent form in the ten games he played for Levante at the outset of this season. Manager Tony Popovic made the decision as he reshapes the team following their World Cup performance.

This move comes as a shock particularly given Ryan’s robust start in La Liga. However, Popovic has opted to incorporate fresh talent, introducing seven new players previously untested on the international stage. Jacob Chapman, currently with St Mirren, is among these recruits and is set to compete with Patrick Beach and Paul Izzo for goalkeeping duties.

New Faces Bolster the Socceroos Line-up

Among those new to the squad are players like Kasey Bos, who follows in the footsteps of his brother Jordan Bos, presently sidelined by injury. Dylan Leonard, a young defender, also joins the camp, highlighting Popovic’s focus on nurturing future potential.

From familiar grounds but seeking new horizons, former A-League standouts Marcus Younis and Eli Adams, along with Kealey Adamson and Yaya Dukuly, will all make their debut appearances. Notably, sixteen members of the World Cup squad are set for the line-up, ensuring experienced support for the newcomers.

Injury Concerns and Legal Troubles

Unfortunately, the squad will be missing a few key players due to injuries. Jordan Bos and Cam Burgess are unable to participate due to knee and Achilles issues, respectively. Meanwhile, Cristian Volpato is ruled out with a hamstring injury and is also dealing with legal difficulties after being fined for driving with cocaine traces in his system.

Popovic addressed the squad changes by pointing out the strategic opportunities these friendlies represent. They are the first to be played back home since March and offer vital preparation for the forthcoming Asian Cup.

These matches against Brazil not only serve as an important test ahead of the Asian Cup selection but also as a platform for the rejuvenated squad to establish chemistry and hit the ground running with fresh talent leading the way.
