India has transitioned from a nation treading carefully between international power blocs to a formidable force that others now eagerly engage with on the global stage. This shift was prominently showcased during the 18th BRICS Summit held recently.

India’s Rise in Global Influence

The summit, attended by leaders from 11 nations, many of which have historically been at odds, saw India steering a collective agenda. The participating countries, all members or partners from the Global South, gathered under an Indian-led initiative to agree on a unified declaration. This move signifies India’s evolution from a country navigating between global powers to one that actively shapes international discourse.

From Sidelines to Leadership

Historically, India adhered to a non-aligned stance, largely influenced by the Cold War dynamics, where it remained neutral amidst major powers. This strategy often placed India on the periphery of global decision-making. However, recent developments indicate a monumental shift. At the recent BRICS conference in Delhi, the city was a nucleus for strategic dialogues. China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Russia were among the key nations that engaged with India, indicating a shift where global powers are now seeking partnerships with India.

Consensus Under Modi’s Leadership

Despite existing geopolitical tensions and economic disagreements, India facilitated an environment where consensus could be reached. Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a vital role in this achievement, demonstrating diplomatic finesse. A few months earlier, BRICS members left a meeting in Delhi without consensus; however, this significant turnaround at the summit resulted in the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration 2026. This outcome underscores India’s growing ability to convene and mediate among diverse international stakeholders.

This progression from historical non-alignment to assuming a lead role in global consensus-building exemplifies India’s strategic ascent on the world stage, one that resonates with nations now eager to be part of India’s envisioned global narrative.
