Nepal Faces DNA Testing Backlogs Amid Catastrophic Floods
Nepal’s forensic system is grappling with an overwhelming number of DNA samples following the devastating floods that hit the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers area. Previously managing fewer than 900 DNA cases annually, labs are now inundated with requests to identify over a thousand victims whose identities remain unknown due to severe conditions affecting visual recognition.
The recent natural disaster resulted in a substantial loss of life and considerable difficulty in identifying victims. Visual identification methods are largely ineffective because many bodies have suffered significant decomposition and mutilation. DNA testing has therefore become the primary means of identification, posing an immense challenge to the infrastructure and capacity of Nepal’s forensic labs.
An Unprecedented Surge in DNA Samples
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Nepal’s police have amassed a staggering 2,678 DNA samples. This includes 1,286 samples collected directly from unidentified victims and 1,412 samples gathered from relatives hoping to confirm the fate of their missing loved ones. This surge in sample volume far exceeds the annual capacity of local laboratories, leaving them struggling to handle the workload.
Strain on Resources and Infrastructure
The sudden influx has not only strained the existing resources but also highlighted the urgent need for bolstered forensic capabilities in Nepal. The labs, which were already under-resourced, find themselves under immense pressure to deliver timely results to grieving families. Expedient and accurate identification is crucial for providing closure and allowing for dignified burials.

In light of these challenges, there is a pressing need for improvements in both infrastructure and human resources within Nepal’s forensic testing facilities. Investment in technology and training could enhance the processing speed and reliability of DNA testing, ensuring that laboratories are better prepared for future emergencies.
