Deadly Explosion at Weapons Depot in Syria’s Idlib

A devastating explosion at a weapons depot near Sarmada in Syria’s Idlib province has resulted in at least 14 fatalities. The tragic incident also left 11 others injured, as reported by state television. The blast, which occurred on Wednesday, sent plumes of smoke into the sky for hours, complicating the efforts of the firefighting teams.

Located near the village of Burj al-Nimra, the depot stored weapons and remnants from Syria’s extended conflict years. The Syrian defence ministry noted that some of its personnel were among the injured individuals, while search and rescue operations continue to seek survivors who might be trapped beneath the debris.

Reports from the Reuters news agency indicated that emergency teams faced delays due to secondary explosions at the site, further complicating attempts to contain the fire and aid survivors. On-the-ground observations by Associated Press photographers have confirmed that bodies have been recovered from the disaster site.

The cause of the blast remains uncertain, though such events are unfortunately not rare in Syria, a nation still reeling from the impacts of civil war that raged from 2011 to 2024. The weapons depot held munitions collected during the Syrian uprising and extended conflict years, according to SANA, the state news agency.

This incident comes just days after another explosion in Idlib’s Binnish town on September 1, where an ammunition-laden vehicle detonated, resulting in five deaths and injuring several others. Both incidents underline the persistent dangers posed by leftover munitions and armaments in war-torn regions of Syria.
