US Politician Brad Lander Detained by Israeli Military at West Bank Olive Harvest

US Politician Brad Lander Detained During West Bank Olive Harvest

In an incident that has drawn international attention, Brad Lander, a prominent US congressional candidate, was detained by Israeli military forces while participating in an olive harvest near Bethlehem in the West Bank. Lander, alongside a diverse group of approximately 80 volunteers including rabbis and other international individuals, was taken into custody on Wednesday.

The group was engaged in peaceful olive-picking activities on Palestinian-owned land when their efforts were interrupted by the arrival of Israeli forces. These activities were organized by Protect the Harvest, an initiative aimed at supporting Palestinian agricultural traditions under challenging circumstances.

Volunteers Detained Amidst Heightened Tensions

Participants, including Lander, were surprised by the military intervention which forced them to halt their activities. According to reports, the area was declared a closed military zone, leading to the separation of the volunteers based on nationality and their subsequent transfer to local police facilities.

Joshua Schoffman, a former deputy attorney general of Israel, criticized the detentions as unwarranted, emphasizing that the olive harvesting was conducted peacefully without any incidents of conflict with settlers or security forces.

Brad Lander’s Advocacy and Release

Lander, a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights and critical of the Israeli government’s policies, was released shortly after his detention. However, many others remain in custody with limited access to basic needs, such as food. Lander’s criticisms, notably around military aid and human rights issues, have previously underpinned his political identity, resonating with his supporters.

Before the incident, Lander expressed his intentions through social media to use his visit to shed light on the plight of Palestinians living under occupation and to contribute positively to the olive harvest.

International Reactions and Ongoing Concerns

The detention comes on the heels of violent incidents involving settlers against Palestinians and international figures in the West Bank. Advocacy groups have condemned these acts and have called for greater accountability and restraint from the Israeli government.

This event underscores the complex geopolitical issues in the region and the everyday struggles faced by individuals engaging in agricultural practices. It serves as another reminder of the tensions that persist in occupied territories, spotlighted by the participation of influential figures like Brad Lander.
