Vinted Acts Against Looters Listing Stolen Items
The online marketplace Vinted has announced decisive measures to remove listings potentially linked to recent looting incidents in France. Over the weekend, riots erupted across multiple French cities, leading to widespread looting and vandalism. In response, Vinted has affirmed its commitment to removing listings associated with these activities.
The company stated that it has “immediate action” protocols in place to identify and eliminate any attempts to sell stolen goods on its platform. Vinted maintains strict guidelines against the sale or solicitation of such items and has emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards any breach of these rules.
Riots Cause Extensive Damage Across France
Tensions have soared in cities like Paris, Marseille, and Lille. The unrest stems from protests that escalated into riots, resulting in more than 1,200 arrests. The damage from these chaotic scenes is estimated to reach hundreds of millions of euros, impacting over 2,000 businesses, as reported by Alain Di Crescenzo, a key figure from France’s Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Athletic stores, luxury boutiques, and local businesses were targets for looters, with many witnesses reporting groups clad in masks vandalizing properties and seizing goods. Major retailers in Paris, including Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Rolex, have seen their storefronts attacked, accelerating a concentrated response from online platforms like Vinted to manage the aftermath.
Collaboration with Authorities
Vinted is actively collaborating with French authorities to curb the online sale of looted merchandise. The platform is enhancing its monitoring systems and working to adapt its processes to better detect and prevent potential illicit activities. Vinted’s plan includes account audits and enforcing permanent bans for those found in violation of its policies.
While eBay has not observed a significant rise in similar illegal activities on its platform, it has joined efforts to collaborate with law enforcement to handle potential cases of stolen goods listings, ensuring prompt actions are taken when credible reports are received.
Preventive Measures Widen
Beyond online marketplaces, on-ground security measures have been intensified. In Paris, known for its high-end shops at Place Vendome, many luxury outlets have fortified their premises with additional security to deter further threats. The ongoing unrest also forced clubs like Olympique de Marseille and Lille to close their merchandise stores indefinitely after facing looting incidents.
The French government is under significant pressure to restore calm, with authorities considering additional curfews to suppress the escalating violence and hold those responsible for the chaos accountable.
