Katie Zacharia Faces Scrutiny Over Legal Credentials
The recent appointment of Katie Zacharia as the White House press secretary has sparked discussions concerning her legal qualifications. Announced by President Donald Trump, Zacharia was introduced as an attorney. However, ambiguities have emerged regarding her legal status in the United States.
During a press briefing, when asked about where she passed the bar exam, Zacharia’s response of “When I moved to China” raised eyebrows. It appears that she is not registered with any state’s bar association in the U.S., although she claims proficiency in international transaction law.
Investigation and Allegations
A watchdog group filed a complaint urging the California State Bar Association to investigate if Zacharia has unlawfully presented herself as a practising attorney. Though she graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school in 2011, a law degree alone does not permit practice.
Zacharia clarified a misunderstanding regarding her response about the bar exam, explaining it was misheard amid loud surroundings. She took the bar exam in California, known for its difficulty, but did not clear it, according to reports.
Professional Background Outside the U.S.
Following her education, Zacharia moved to China with her husband, where her capabilities in international law flourished. Although only Chinese citizens may qualify as practising attorneys, she worked in other capacities at a law firm in Beijing and engaged in legal advising for significant international bodies like the World Bank.
Her career later brought her back to the U.S., where she served as general counsel for a non-profit organization, highlighting her alignment with conservative circles.
The White House’s Stand
The White House has defended Zacharia’s appointment, emphasizing her unique qualifications and intelligence for the role. While her legal qualifications are questioned, her broad experience in legal advisory roles internationally is being highlighted as a facet of her capability to serve. The coming days will likely uncover more details on how this story unfolds.
