French Supermarkets Hit by Cyberattack, Refrigerators Heated to 50°C

French Supermarkets Under Cyber Siege

A sophisticated cyberattack has shocked France as it targeted the refrigerator systems of major supermarket chains, leading to significant losses of food products. This unexpected breach resulted in refrigerators in hundreds of Intermarché and Coopérative U outlets heating up to 50°C, rendering all stored fresh and frozen goods unsalvageable.

The attack, described as “unprecedented,” has sparked concerns among authorities and businesses alike. The Paris prosecutor’s office acknowledged the severity of the situation, marking it as a large-scale operational threat involving refrigeration units across numerous French supermarkets.

Government and Retail Response

Reacting to this crisis, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has tasked the country’s national cybersecurity agency, ANSSI, with an immediate inquiry into the cause and extent of the breach. Preliminary investigations suggest a potential linkage to a known software vulnerability provided by the Danish company Danfoss.

Intermarché, part of the Les Mousquetaires group, reported that approximately 150 outlets were impacted, necessitating the disposal of all affected products to prevent any health risks. Similarly, Dominique Schelcher, CEO of Coopérative U, confirmed that his supermarkets were critically affected, highlighting the grave impact of the attack on essential food supplies.

Wider European Implications

Beyond France, there are rising concerns that the cyberattack might extend to other European retailers. Dutch supermarket operator Ahold Delhaize reported associated network issues, leading them to shut down several systems as a preventive measure. Although their physical stores in the Netherlands and Belgium stayed open, digital disruptions affected their app and service offerings.

In response to this alarming trend of cyber vulnerabilities, there is heightened urgency for countries to bolster their security infrastructures. The event serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks cyberattacks pose to critical sectors, underlining the importance of updating and securing technological systems.

Ongoing Investigations and Future Preparedness

Danfoss confirmed that the affected refrigeration management systems were running outdated software, advising customers to ensure their systems are regularly updated. This incident underscores the critical need for vigilance and protection against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

This cyberattack adds to the growing list of concerns regarding cybersecurity in Europe, especially given the broader context of geopolitical tensions and the threat of hybrid warfare tactics. With President Emmanuel Macron’s recent directives to guard national infrastructure against such threats, France is expected to ramp up its defensive measures significantly.
