Riyadh Airport Attack Claims Lead to Flight Suspensions
Houthis claim attack on Riyadh airport, causing flight suspensions by major airlines.
Riyadh Airport Faces Disruptions Following Claimed Attack
Air travel to and from the Saudi capital was disrupted after the Yemeni Houthi group announced an attack on Riyadh’s airport. The rebels claimed they launched a ballistic missile strike that severely damaged an aircraft and prompted several international airlines to halt their operations to the city.
While the Saudi government has yet to officially respond to the attack claims, sources familiar with the situation reported significant damage to a Saudia Airlines aircraft. Shrapnel from an exploded missile struck the plane, which was fortunately unoccupied at the time. Emergency responders were on the scene, handling the aftermath of the large explosion witnessed by multiple observers.
Following the attack, airlines such as Lufthansa and Air India suspended their services to Riyadh, citing safety concerns. Flight tracking data indicated that nearly half of the departure flights from the airport were canceled, with expectations of further disruptions to follow. The frequency of such incidents has disrupted Kingdom’s airports, prompting a heightened alert within the aviation sector.
Escalation of Conflict
In recent weeks, the Houthis have intensified their military operations against Saudi targets. The group’s tactics include warnings to evacuate energy installations, as they aim to confront Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces actively. This regional tension continues amidst Yemen’s ongoing civil conflict, which has seen shifting fronts, most recently near Taiz and Aden.
Separately, Saudi authorities reported additional missile debris damages in Riyadh, affecting civilian facilities such as a kindergarten and medical complex. The ongoing conflict has posed significant humanitarian and safety challenges for the Saudi population, as the nation prepares to host significant international events like the WPC Energy Congress, raising concerns about security.
The context of these attacks is tied to the broader conflict in Yemen, where government and Houthi forces are engaged in a fierce battle for territorial control. The recent resurgence of fighting has affected both civilians and infrastructure, amplifying the call for urgent conflict resolution measures.
