Record-Breaking Sonoma Estate Sale

In a significant real estate transaction, a sprawling Sonoma ranch now holds the title for the highest residential sale in California’s Sonoma County, fetching $38.5 million. Purchased in 2014 by tech mogul Mark Leslie and his spouse Debra Leslie, the property underwent an extensive $33 million transformation before achieving its record-breaking sale.

From Untouched Land to Luxurious Retreat

The Leslies’ vision turned a vast but undeveloped 1,100-acre plot into a luxurious and self-sufficient retreat. Situated at 3100 Sonoma Mountain Road, the estate, aptly named The Summit, includes a stylish main house with panoramic views, guest accommodations, and agricultural facilities. There are 14,966 square feet of living space, featuring ten bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and three partial bathrooms. The architectural design incorporates modern touches such as open-beam ceilings and expansive glass panels, offering magnificent sights of Northern California’s natural beauty.

Focus on Self-Sufficiency and Sustainability

Central to the redevelopment was a commitment to sustainability. The property benefits from an off-grid energy system leveraging solar power and backup generators, ensuring resilience and independence. Extensive environmental restoration efforts included clearing invasive plants, reinforcing natural waterways, and crafting several small lakes. This commitment to ecological stewardship has fostered habitats for wildlife and allowed for the cultivation of fruit orchards and vineyard-ready plots.

A Landmark Transaction

Before its sale for $38.5 million—which closed on August 21—the property was listed at almost $40 million. Marketed as one of Northern California’s most secluded estates, its remote location offers a world of privacy while remaining accessible to San Francisco. The buyer, whose identity remains undisclosed, now owns a piece of real estate that aligns with the growing demand for private, self-sufficient properties in the region. This purchase highlights ongoing interest in estates that promise both seclusion and near access to tech hubs.
