Asos Alerts Users to Severe Data Breach Risk
Asos warns millions of users about data breach risks after hackers share detailed profiles.
Asos Data Breach Poses Serious Risks to Customers
The popular online retailer, Asos, has recently informed its users that the company has experienced a serious data breach. This incident has put potentially millions of user profiles in the hands of cybercriminals. Initially, the breach was thought to involve only basic contact information, but further reports indicate a much wider scope.
After hackers reached out to BBC News, the full extent of the breach became clear. The compromised data includes names, addresses, phone numbers, email details, and customer identification numbers. Even the specific searches carried out on Asos’s site have been exposed. Key terms such as ‘reclaimed vintage’ and ‘glamorous wide fit’ can now be linked back to individual users.
As a result, there is an increased risk of phishing attacks targeting Asos users. These targeted scams could appear through emails or phone calls, masquerading as legitimate messages from the retailer. Asos has reassured customers that no financial information or passwords were accessed during this breach.
Nevertheless, users have been advised to be vigilant about potential scams. Asos highlighted that they will never request passwords, security codes, or payment details through unsolicited communications.
The scale of this breach has not been addressed by Asos as they chose not to comment on how many users were affected. Notably, hackers exploited the Asos app system to send misleading notifications. This alarming breach prompted Asos to notify both shareholders and customers through an update on the London Stock Exchange and a follow-up email warning.
On Wednesday, following the initial announcement, the hackers shared detailed samples of the stolen data with the BBC, further confirming the severity of the breach.
Despite the revelations, Asos has remained focused on customer security and is urging everyone to exercise caution to avoid falling victim to potential scams. The company is working towards measures to prevent such intrusions in the future.
