A Storied Career in Indian Entertainment

Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar passed away at the age of 75, leaving an indelible mark on the world of cinema and theatre. Known for his compelling performances across Bollywood and Marathi films, Patekar’s death was confirmed by his son Malhar after the actor suffered a cardiac arrest at his Goa residence. Despite efforts to revive him, he passed away early Thursday morning.

Breaking Through in Bollywood

Patekar’s journey in acting began with theatre, honing his skills that would later set the stage for his success in Bollywood. The actor first appeared in the film ‘Gaman’ in 1978, gradually gaining recognition for his powerful screen presence. His breakout role came with the 1989 film ‘Parinda’, where he portrayed a gangster, earning him both a National Film Award and a Filmfare Award.

Throughout the 1990s, Patekar delivered a series of memorable performances. His roles varied from a relentless army major in ‘Prahaar’ to a patriotic figure in ‘Krantiveer’, the latter securing him another national accolade. He continued to defy expectations with his versatility, as seen in ‘Khamoshi’, where he played a character who was unable to hear or speak.

Legacy Beyond Films

Not limited to the silver screen, Patekar was a revered figure in Marathi and Hindi theatre. He maintained an active presence in the theatre community even while succeeding in films. Plays like ‘Purush’ and ‘Hamidabai Chi Kothi’ are among his notable contributions.

His bold personality extended to his public life as he often spoke candidly on social issues, gaining a reputation for his straightforwardness. Patekar’s commitment to societal causes was evident when he co-founded the Naam Foundation in 2015 alongside actor Makarand Anaspure, focusing on initiatives to support farmers and improve rural infrastructure in Maharashtra.

Controversy and Vindication

Patekar’s career was not without controversy. In 2018, amid the #MeToo movement, actor Tanushree Dutta accused him of sexual harassment stemming from a decade-old incident on set.
