The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Devin Jacob Ballard, is stationed at the US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. The victim, Yagi Anna, aged 39, was found in Naha, the capital city of Okinawa Prefecture, early Saturday morning. Japan’s top officials, including Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, have expressed their outrage, labeling the crime as both brutal and heinous.
Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi conveyed his indignation over social media, emphasizing the persistent anxiety such incidents cause among local residents. Meanwhile, Okinawa Governor Genta Koja criticized the perceived ineffectiveness of the US military in enforcing discipline and preventing such occurrences.
