Twins Face Severe Consequences for Protesting in Iran
The plight of 19-year-old twin sisters, Taraneh and Romina Rahimi, reflects the harsh crackdown by Iranian authorities on demonstrators challenging the regime. After months of fruitless searching by their family, the grim situation faced by the sisters has come to light, marking another stark warning against dissent in the country.
The sisters were abruptly taken from their home by masked men, later identified as members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, for their participation in massive anti-government protests last January. Their mother, Marzieh Nourmohammadi, was left in an agonizing wait for four months before finally discovering that her daughters were imprisoned. The twins’ participation in the protests, attended by millions, has now led to dire consequences.
Reports from a cousin based in the U.S. depict a disturbing picture of abuse, including threats against Taraneh that were claimed to force confessions under duress. The sisters were last seen by family members five months ago in Dowlatabad prison. Tragically, the Iranian judiciary has sentenced Taraneh to death, while Romina faces a lengthy 25-year imprisonment. The disparity in their sentences remains unclear, but it underscores a relentless attempt by the authorities to instill fear among the populace.
The Iranian government has faced international condemnation, with the UK and 30 other nations rebuking these sentences as part of a brutal strategy to crush opposition voices. In a year marked by escalating tensions, including conflict with the US and Israel, Iran has executed hundreds, with protesters making up a significant portion of those sentenced or at risk of capital punishment.
Despite the personal danger, Taraneh and Romina’s cousin, Masoud Nourmohammadi, has chosen to speak publicly about their case. Living in Utah, he has received threats meant to silence his advocacy against Iran’s actions. Nevertheless, he believes that such cases should ignite a stronger determination to challenge the current regime.
